ENR 1.7  Altimeter setting procedures

1.  Introduction

The altimeter setting procedures in use generally conform to those contained in ICAO Doc 8168.

Transition altitudes are given on the instrument approach charts and under AD 2.17.

QNH reports and temperature information for use are provided by automatic terminal information service (ATIS) and are available on request from the air traffic services units. QNH values are given in hectopascals.

2.  Basic altimeter setting procedures

2.1 The pilot shall maintain the cruising altitude or flight level of the aircraft, as the case may be, by reference to an altimeter that is set in accordance with the following:

  1. when operating at or above the established transition altitude for that aerodrome, set altimeter to 1013.25 hPa (760 mmHg);

  2. when operating at or below the established transition level for that aerodrome, set altimeter to the aerodrome QNH and QFE altimeter setting;

  3. when operating between transition altitude and transition level, maintain altitude or flight level as authorised by ATC.

2.2 The pilot shall maintain altimeter setting and flight level as advised by an ATC unit, when flight level is below the departure aerodrome transition altitude and shall set the altimeter to 1013.25 hPa (760 mmHg) after exits from the controlled area.
2.3 Unless otherwise authorised by ATC unit, pilot-in-command of an aircraft operating within the airspace of Mongolia under VFR and IFR shall not maintain level cruising flight at any level between transition altitude and transition level.

3.  Description of altimeter setting region

Not applicable.

4.  Procedures applicable to operators (including pilots)

4.1 Flight planning

The levels at which a flight is to be conducted shall be specified in a flight plan:

  1. in terms of flight levels if the flight is to be conducted at or above the transition level;

  2. in terms of altitudes if the flight is to be conducted in the vicinity of an aerodrome and at or below the transition altitude.

Note: The following vertical separation is required between all flights conducted in the airspace of Mongolia:

  1. 300 M up to the flight level of 8400 M.

  2. 500 M between the flight levels 8400 M and 8900 M;

  3. 300 M between the flight levels 8900 M and 12500 M;

  4. 600 M above the flight level 12500 M.
